KLM Flight Skids Off Runway During Emergency Landing And An Air Canada Plane Catches Fire After Landing Gear Failure Amid Deadly South Korean Jeju Airlines Crash-Landing

Amid the holidays, there has been an increase in traveling and air traffic, which sadly makes way for increased reports about planes colliding and planes crashing, like with the deadly South Korean Jeju Airlines crash-landing, and now reports of a KLM flight skidding off a runway during an emergency landing and an Air Canada plane catching fire after a landing gear failure.

In addition to the tragic South Korean Jeju Airlines crash-landing we reported on over the weekend and the suspenseful near collision between the Gonzaga University men’s basketball team private jet and a Delta passenger plane at LAX on Friday (December 27), two additional reports have surfaced from Saturday involving a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight that skidded off a runway during an emergency landing and an Air Canada flight that caught fire after experiencing a landing gear failure.

According to a press release from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, during take-off of flight KL1204 from Oslo, Norway to Amsterdam, Netherlands on Saturday (December 28), a loud noise was heard. The incident resulted in the plane diverting to the airport of Sandefjord, Norway.

KLM reported, “After the emergency landing at the airport, the Boeing 737 veered off the runway into the grass at low speed. All 176 passengers and 6 crew members were unharmed and were taken care of.”

On Sunday (December 29), KLM updated, “Our passengers were transported to Oslo by bus last night and provided with hotel accommodation if required. KLM will send an aircraft this afternoon to pick up passengers in Oslo. They will be assisted both at Oslo Gardermoen airport and in Amsterdam.

KLM’s technical team will arrive in Sandefjord this morning to investigate the circumstances of the incident together with local authorities and the airport in accordance with aviation procedure, and retrieve the aircraft as soon as possible.”

Additionally, on Saturday evening (December 28), an Air Canada flight landed at a Nova Scotia airport, but skidded down the runway and caught fire after a landing gear failure. The harrowing incident happened at 9:30 p.m. and resulted in the Halifax Stanfield International Airport being shut down for more than an hour and a half. Authorities reported that none of the 73 passengers or the flight crew were seriously injured. All flight incidents are being investigated by the appropriate authorities.

As previously mentioned and reported, earlier that Saturday, 179 people died after a South Korean Jeju Airlines flight crash-landed at the airport in Muan, South Korea, after a reported bird strike. Only two people were rescued from Jeju Airlines Flight 2216. The lone survivors were both members, a male and a female.
