While many fans assumed their move was a show of solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, the former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, who was at the center of a nationwide debate in 2016 after he started — turns out it was absolutely not a protest of any sort.

In a video obtained by TMZ shows Jay speaking at Columbia University today where he addressed the now-viral video. A Columbia professor had asked him if he remained seated to “convey a signal,” and Jay honestly replied, “It actually wasn’t. Sorry.”

Jay explained that he and his wife were actually really focused on Demi Lovato’s performance. He said Beyoncé told him she was thinking about what Demi must have been going through in the seconds before starting the Anthem. “We immediately jumped into artist mode.” Jay added, “I’m really just looking at the show. The mics start, was it too low to start?” He went on to say that he was concerned about the audio and the show overall as since his company Roc Nation is now producing all of the entertainment at Super Bowls. As we previously reported, Jay-Z struck this big deal with the NFL last year.

That wasn’t all he said, check out the full video here and let us know your thoughts in the comment box below!
