Hundreds of people are currently protesting in the Dominican Republic after municipal elections were suspended due to “technical difficulties.”

According to Remezcla, the suspension was ordered by the Central Electoral Board, also known as the JCE, due to the technical difficulties found in ballot machines that are used to elect over 3,849 positions in 158 municipalities. The issue was discussed by JCE President César Castaños a day after the elections stating that he was aware of the machines malfunctioning but voters also noticed that candidates who were not a part of the Dominican Liberation Party were not listed on digital ballots.

This along with the system’s malfunctioning among the ballot machines has led citizens to protest that the JCE members should step down from their positions after allegedly causing the errors to benefit the Dominican Liberation Party.

Protests began on Sunday and various information about the JCE and their involvement in the elections went viral on social media.

As reported by Remezcla, Castaños said in a statement that the municipal elections will begin on March 15 after facing criticism from citizens due to their involvement in controlling the ballot machines.
