The woman has been identified as 23-year-old Abby Elizabeth Chosewood. On Tuesday (August 1), officials with the Gainesville Police Department charged the young woman with two felonies: cruelty to children and aggravated assault.

Officials said the young woman “nearly killed” a child she was babysitting back in February of this year. Gainesville Police said she allegedly suffocated and/or strangled the 1-year-old child in her care, causing serious bodily harm. Chosewood is currently being held in the Hall County Jail.

Speaking on the incident, Gainesville police spokesman Lt. Kevin Holbrook told Atlanta’s Channel 2 Action News, “It is unthinkable. There is nothing for us to go on as to exactly why this did happen. This is something that we may never know. The child obviously is too young to tell us the truth. But obviously, Chosewood knows what exactly happened and hopefully it will come out in court.”

Lt. Holbrook said that Chosewood’s arrest arrives after months of investigations. However, it was noted that Gainesville PD investigators still have very few answers on what led to the alleged assault. Lt. Holbrook added that unfortunately, there were no witnesses nor any baby monitors or video cameras set up to capture the alleged incident. The investigation continues.

Prior to the February 2023 incident, Chosewood — whose Facebook claims she graduated from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA in 2022 — had a run-in with the law in 2021, leaving her on probation.

The young woman, whose personal website says she was a Multimedia Journalism major, was booked into the Bulloch County Jail on April 8, 2021 on a slew of charges related to stealing a debit card. Reportedly, she used another woman’s card to shop online days before her arrest.

Per The Georgia Gazette, Chosewood was hit with two counts of financial transaction card fraud; one count of identity theft fraud when using/possessing; and one felony count of identifying info concerning a person. She ended up pleading guilty in September 2022 and was sentenced to two years of probation.
