Donald Trump Slams ‘Out Of Control’ Smithsonian Museum Over Slavery Exhibits: ‘They’re Focusing Too Much On How Bad Slavery Was’

Nearly a month ago, Trump ranted about the Smithsonian Museum focusing too much on “how bad slavery was.” Subsequently, he ordered his attorneys to conduct a review on the museum and other institutions displaying such information.

On August 19, Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social with a post claiming the museums are ‘out of control.” He wrote:

“The Museums throughout Washington, but all over the Country are, essentially, the last remaining segment of ‘WOKE.’ The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future.

We are not going to allow this to happen, and I have instructed my attorneys to go through the Museums, and start the exact same process that has been done with Colleges and Universities where tremendous progress has been made. This Country cannot be WOKE, because WOKE IS BROKE. We have the ‘HOTTEST’ Country in the World, and we want people to talk about it, including in our Museums.”

The post marked yet another chapter in Trump’s ongoing war with institutions he deems “woke.” However, the Smithsonian isn’t just some random collection of exhibits. These museums tell the real story of America, even the parts that hurt, including slavery.

The image is known as “The Scourged Back.” It depicts an African-American slave named Gordon who escaped from Mississippi and reached a Union Army camp in Louisiana in 1863.

The photograph is attributed to two photographers, McPherson and Oliver, who were in the camp at the time. The image became one of the best known photographs of the Civil War and a powerful weapon for abolitionists. Gordon served in the Union army African American regiment and reached the rank of sergeant.
