As we previously shared, Trump shared his controversial comments during a campaign rally. While standing on stage at the Pinnacle Bank Expo Center in Gand Island on Monday evening (October 5), Trump invited Iran to “take out” Los Angeles and San Diego. He said:

“And again, remember with the war, it’s just artificial. It’s a little bit high. It’s a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe. They can take out a city. Let them take, let it, let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego. That’s, this is a very small price to pay, and it’s gonna be over very soon. It’s essentially almost over with. And they might keep going a little long, you know? They always say they have a big threshold for pain. They need it, let me tell you. They need it. But it’s gonna end very soon, and it’ll end one way or the other, and your gas and your gasoline and all of the things. And don’t forget, we also took on a country known as Venezuela. They never talk about that. They never talk about Venezuela. And we’re taking in hundreds of millions of barrels of oil every week.”

When later asked about his comments by reporters, Trump straight up ignored them. Meanwhile, the White House defended Trump and said people are misunderstanding his remarks. They argued that he was using a retrospective warning to state that American cities would have been targeted by a nuclear-armed Iran if his administration hadn’t aggressively intervened earlier this year.

California’s Governor And Los Angeles And San Diego’s Mayors Slam Donald Trump After Inviting Iran To ‘Take Them Out’

Hypotheticals, sarcasm, jokes, and trolling aside, current leaders in California — and even a former state Attorney General and Senator (Kamala Harris) — have condemned Trump’s “derangement” and “treason” and his administration’s lack of a “backbone.”

While taking to X, via his personal account, Newsom fired off:

“After sending the National Guard and Marines to occupy California, Donald Trump is now saying our foreign enemies should “take out” Los Angeles and San Diego. He is deranged and dangerous. The SILENCE from JD Vance and Marco Rubio today is deafening. An American president is talking about Los Angeles and San Diego being ‘taken out.’ Where the hell is Congress? This is dangerous. The time to stand up is NOW.”

On Newsom’s Governor X account, he wrote:

“Disgusting and disqualifying. Donald Trump’s remarks were dangerous — if not treasonous — putting a target on two of our biggest cities and one of America’s largest naval hubs. I am directing the State Threat Assessment Center to actively monitor the situation in the event that foreign actors interpret the President’s remarks as an invitation to target California.”

Meanwhile, on Karen Bass’ personal X account, she wrote, “Keep LA out of your damn mouth.” Taking to her Mayor X account, she wrote:

“The President of the United States suggested that a foreign government attack Los Angeles. His statements against our city are dangerous and could potentially compromise our safety. The role of a president is to protect the country, not to actively threaten it and encourage attacks on American lives. In the face of irresponsible threats, as Angelenos, we know how to stand together and protect our city.”

On Todd Gloria’s Mayor X account, he wrote:

“San Diego is not collateral damage. We are not expendable. And we are never a ‘small price to pay.’ Keep our city out of your reckless war talk.”
