In a new exclusive interview with @PEOPLE ahead of the premiere of Lifetime’s new documentary TLC Forever, singer Chilli takes a little trip back down memory lane to talk about her past relationships including the time she dated R&B superstar Usher.

As many music fans are aware, the stars dated each other from 2001-2004. While speaking with the outlet she admits that they had an amazing work relationship but when it came to their romantic life, it was a bit rocky.

The “No Scrubs” singer explained, “We definitely had some chemistry,” she said. “But working chemistry does not mean it works in your personal life. If we were working, it was great. But outside of that, we’re so different.” She continued: “It looked great, but in real life, he knew he had to be a certain way with me and he couldn’t.”

Chilli also went on to set the record straight about his hit breakup album Confessions. She noted that it was not about her despite what many believed. She noted, “I was with him at the studio that whole time.”

Despite their breakup, the two still kept in touch but that all came to an end when she started to lean “on her Christian faith” and cut all ties and contact in 2019 so she could “focus on herself.”

“I love hard,” says Chilli. “I was like, ‘God, why can’t I get over this?’ He couldn’t either.” After taking some time for herself, she shared that she “even stopped dating. Because before that I thought if I met the right guy during that time that I wasn’t over [Usher] it wouldn’t work. I would never want to straddle the fence.”

Aside from her love life with Usher, she dated producer Dallas Austin who she shares a child with. That relationship also turned out not to be the best for her as she revealed she almost got kicked out of her girl group. “They were holding auditions to replace me but never saw anybody that they liked,” Chili explained. “I don’t think anybody cared about the Dallas thing but Pebbles.”

Who Is Chilli Dating Now?

Chill has been dating Boy Meets World star Matthew Lawrence following his divorce from Cheryl Burke. The actor and the TLC singer, whose real name is Rozonda Thomas, started seeing each other romantically in November 2022.

She then went on to share, “To this day we have not had one argument. I’m like ‘Matthew, it’s gonna happen one day, cause we’re going to be together forever.'”
