Chaka Khan ‘Sincerely Apologizes’ For Shady Comments Towards Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey & Adele: ‘It Wasn’t My Intention To Upset Anyone’

Earlier this week, we shared some audio of Chaka as she joined Los Angeles Magazine’s podcast, ’The Originals.’

While there, the 69-year-old icon shared her grievances about Rolling Stone’s list of 200 greatest singers of all time — which ranked MJB, Mariah Carey and Adele higher than her No. 29 spot.

Aside from shading MJB’s ranking with Rolling Stone, Chaka also addressed some older 1990s tea about how she used to introduce the song “Sweet Thing,” sang by Rufus and written by her back in 1975, as “the song Mary J. Blige f***ed up.” Chaka said MJB’s cover had “flat vocals,” which she said she told Mary herself.

Since the her comments went viral, catching debatable backlash, Chaka is now clearing the air via a lengthy caption posted to her Instagram on Sunday night (March 5).

Chaka said, “Recently, I was asked about a list of the ‘greatest singers of all time’ and instead of questioning the need for such a list, I was pitted against other artists and I took the bait. As artists, we are unfairly put into ‘boxes’, ‘categories’ or on ‘lists. Being an artist or musician is not a competition.

It’s a gift, for which I am truly grateful. It was not my intention to cause pain or upset anyone. To anyone that felt this way, I sincerely apologize.”

Chaka continued, Thank you for all the love everyone has shown me, unconditionally. I have always been about empowering others and I started a foundation for that very purpose. I will be announcing soon.

Empowering all artists is most important because we truly are the architects of change.and change begins within the heart. I love you all and God bless – Chaka.”
