The excitement of catching a baseball can sometimes make fans forget about their surroundings, a lesson a dad learned the hard way during a college baseball game between the Campbell Fighting Camels and N.C. State Wolfpack in South Carolina on Sunday.
The dad was holding a child, who is believed to be his son, when he saw a foul ball hit by a Wolfpack player land past the stands and into the pavilion area. Without thinking twice, he went after the ball but ended up tripping and falling hard on the pavement, slamming his son’s skull into the ground.

The incident was captured on video and went viral, raising awareness about the risks of chasing after balls while holding children. Fortunately, both the dad and his son were fine, but it was a close call. Despite the mishap, the Campbell Fighting Camels beat N.C. State with a score of 11-1, but later lost to South Carolina in the regional championship game 16-7, sending the Gamecocks to the super-regional for the first time since 2018.
The dad’s eagerness to catch a foul ball may have been fueled by his love for baseball, a sport that has been an American tradition for over a century. However, people on social media have since reacted, saying safety should always come first, especially when children are involved.
Others said that parents should be aware of their surroundings and potential hazards before chasing after balls or engaging in any other activities that may put their little ones at risk. One user said it was also essential to teach kids about safety rules and encourage them to follow them, such as staying in designated areas and avoiding running in crowded places.
Baseball is a sport that requires a lot of running and chasing after the ball. However, accidents can happen while chasing a baseball. In one comical incident, two baseball players collided with each other while chasing a high ball during the sixth inning of a game.
Another incident involved a fan who fell over the stands while trying to catch a souvenir ball, only to return to his seat empty-handed. These accidents may not seem serious, but they can still result in injuries. One player who experienced the dangers of chasing a baseball was Pete Reiser, an outfielder for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Reiser was known for risking his life to win ballgames and had already been involved in several major incidents, including cracking his head against outfield walls and separating his shoulder from falling into a ditch while chasing a ball. In 1947, during a game against the Pirates, Reiser made a catch that led him to collide with the wall and crumple at its base.
He had a wicked V-shaped cut on his forehead and ended up in the hospital. Fortunately, Reiser survived the incident and even made the news for his impressive catch.
