Search Called Off After Teen Baseball Star Jumps From Cruise Ship On A Dare, Others Tried To Stop Him

Prior to the end of the search for his body, a video had surfaced online last week showing an 18-year-old baseball star named Cameron Robbins jumping from a cruise ship traveling the Bahamas.

It is reported that on May 24, Robbins and his friends, along with several hundred other graduates, were traveling the islands on Blackbeard’s Revenge sunset cruise to celebrate their recent achievement of graduating from high school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

What started off as a fun and celebratory trip ended in tragedy after Robbins dove overboard into the water around 9:30 p.m., near the uninhabited Athol Island, northeast of Nassau.

The teen reportedly jumped as part of a dare. In the clip uploaded online, viewers can see that some of his peers were getting excited about the dare, up until he vanished from behind the boat and out of everyone’s point of view.

Subsequently, Robbins’ friends began to scream at him and give him directions to save himself. They ended up throwing him a life preserver and yelled for him to grab. However, the life saver was not as close as he needed; so, he never reached it and soon disappeared into the water, leaving his friends to panic even more.

Eventually, the U.S. Coast Guard and other Bahamian authorities  (Royal Bahamas Defense Force and United Cajun Navy) arrived to the scene to search for Robbins. However, by 3 a.m. that night, his body had not been found.

Officials continued to comb the sea for any signs of life, but after several unsuccessful days, the search for Robbins’ body was officially called off as of Tuesday (May 30).

Experts, like Royal Bahamas Defense Force Commodore Raymond King, said the area was “shark-infested.” To be exact, others said the area is made up of dolphins, tiger sharks and bull sharks. They claimed in those waters where Robbins jumped, the animals feed off of the scraps from the boats.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, Robbins is presumed dead. In a statement since released, they said, “We offer our sincerest condolences to Cameron Robbins’ family and friends.”

Amid the search and news of its conclusion, Robbins’ family, who flew into the Bahamas last week, held daily prayer vigils for him and have since spoken out.

The Robbins family said, “The Bahamas government has called off the rescue for Cameron and we are returning to Baton Rouge. We want to thank the Bahamas government, the U.S. Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy, and Congressman Garrett Graves for everything they have done for us. In this time of grief, we thank our family, friends, and well-wishers for granting us the privacy we need to properly remember our son and mourn his loss.”

Since the incident, it has been reported that one woman’s son, who was friends with Robbins and on the boat, said several other students tried to grab him before he went overboard, but he slipped through anyway. She also referred to the trip as a “booze cruise.”
