Drew Barrymore Slams Tabloids For Twisting Her Words About Her Mother: “I Have Never Said That I Wished My Mother Was Dead”

A couple of articles have been floating around about talk show host Drew Barrymore as many have misquoted her saying she wishes her mother was dead.

Drew had recently interviewed with the New York magazine where she talked about her tumultuous childhood with her mother and spoke about her friends who have already lost their parents. Page Six quoted her saying, “All their moms are gone, and my mom’s not. And I’m like, ‘Well, I don’t have that luxury.’ But I cannot wait. I don’t want to live in a state where I wish someone to be gone sooner than they’re meant to be so I can grow. I actually want her to be happy and thrive and be healthy. But I have to f–king grow in spite of her being on this planet,” Drew is quoted saying in her interview with the New York Mag.

In the interview she also looked back on her feelings, “I dared to say it, and I didn’t feel good,” she admitted. “I do care. I’ll never not care. I don’t know if I’ve ever known how to fully guard, close off, not feel, build the wall up.”

Somehow, a few outlets took that as Drew admitting that she “cannot wait” for her mother, Jaid Barrymore, to die as she reflected on her childhood. However, the actress is speaking out to set the record straight and to slam tabloids who mixed up her words. In an emotional video, Drew said, “You know what, to all you tabloids out there, you have been f*cking with my life since I was 13 years old. I have never said that I wished my mother was dead. How dare you put those words in my mouth.”

“I have been vulnerable and tried to figure out a very difficult, painful relationship while admitting it is difficult to do while a parent is alive. And, for those of us who have to figure that out in real time cannot wait, as in they cannot wait for the time, not that the parent is dead,” Barrymore continued.

More On Drew Barrymore’s Relationship With Her Mom

Drew previously spoke about what it was like growing up as a young actress whose mother also served as her manager, and yet acted as a friend. She previously shared that her mother took her to parties and nightclubs and at one point in her life even dated her daughter’s boyfriends, ET Canada notes. Back in 1995 when Drew posed nude for Playboy, her mother did that same year and even claimed the title “Drew’s Sexy Mom”.

As challenging as it was to be in the entertainment industry at such a young age, at the age of 12, Drew was also already struggling with drug and alcohol abuse. Not only did she attend rehab but at 13 her mother reportedly placed her in a psychiatric ward. After some time away from her parents, she later managed to reconcile with her father, John, before he passed away in 2004.

As for her mother, Drew continues to support her mother financially. However, the two still haven’t properly reconciled.
