Asian Immigrant, Who Was Brutally Attacked In Hate Crime Last April, Dies Of His Injuries
Last April, an Asian immigrant, identified as Yao Pan Ma, was brutally attacked in New York City. Eight months later, the 61-year-old sadly died of his injuries; his death ruled a homicide.
NYC police recently revealed that Ma passed on December 31, 2021, eight months after being attacked while collecting cans in East Harlem. It’s said that Ma lost his Chinatown restaurant job during the pandemic. On the day of the incident, he was pushing a cart full of recyclables before he was rushed to Harlem Hospital and placed in a medically induced coma, battling for his life.
The assailant, 50-year-old Jarrod Powell, has already been hit with attempted murder, felony assault and hate crime charges. Since Ma’s death, community activists are now calling on prosecutors to upgrade the charges against Powell.
