Adele Speaks On Cultural Appropriation Scandal: ‘I Didn’t Read The F–king Room’
Beloved singer Adele is discussing one of her controversial moments and she’s admitting that she really didn’t “read the room” at the time.
In 2020, Adele popped out for London’s Notting Hill Carnival 2020, and she rocked a Jamaican flag bikini and Bantu knots. While many people loved seeing the singer back on the scene following her reported 100-pound weight loss, others criticized her carnival look and accused her of cultural appropriation.

While speaking with British Vogue in a new interview for their November issue, she said, she “totally” understands why she faced backlash. “I didn’t read the f–king room.” The 33-year-old added, “I could see comments being like, ‘The nerve to not take it down,’ which I totally get,” she said. “But if I take it down, it’s me acting like it never happened. And it did. I totally get why people felt like it was appropriating.”
“I was wearing a hairstyle that is actually to protect Afro hair. [It] ruined mine, obviously,” she said.
Aside from this, she also talked about her new music that’s on the way: “I feel like this album is self-destruction, then self-reflection and then sort of self-redemption,” she said. “But I feel ready. I really want people to hear my side of the story this time.”
