Lil Nas X shared an Instagram post this Saturday morning with a short but deep message to his mom: “RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY.” He added, “This one’s gonna hurt.”
The post is brief but heavy. Lil Nas X’s relationship with his mother was never simple, and he’s never pretended it was. Back in 2020, he opened up to Variety about their strained bond, admitting, “She’s an addict so we don’t have the closest relationship. Even trying to get her better — things didn’t quite work out. But there’s still love…”
As some are aware, the two had a complicated, very public journey. There were viral moments that hurt to watch, videos of Tamekia struggling on the streets of Atlanta, online pile-ons accusing her son of turning his back on her while riding high off global superstardom. Lil Nas X pushed back hard against that narrative more than once, writing candidly on social media, “y’all n****s don’t know how many nights I’ve cried myself to sleep feeling guilty because nothing I tried would help my mom.” He talked about paying for rehab. He talked about the guilt. He never made it look easy, because it wasn’t.

Just last year, after his own hospitalization following an incident in Los Angeles, it was Tamekia who showed up in an interview with unmistakable, unfiltered love for her son, calling him “my doobie,” joking she was going to “whoop his behind,” but making it clear underneath the humor that she was proud of who he’d become despite everything they’d both been through.
Lil Nas didn’t share any further information regarding her death. We’ll continue to update as more information becomes available. But right now, all love and prayers go out to Montero and the entire Hill family during what is clearly an incredibly painful time.
