Five months after she publicly announced the end of her relationship with Dallas Mavericks star Klay Thompson, and just as many months since she accused him of cheating, the Houston Hottie is opening up about what that year with the NBA champ actually did to her spirit. And the answer, in her own words, is that it nearly cost her herself.
In a beautiful new cover story with InStyle published September 9, Megan, like always, kept it real with her fans while describing the emotional toll of the relationship. “It was very rough,” she told the outlet, adding, “What’s meant for you is always going to work out. And if something is constantly making you feel uncomfortable, just on edge all the time, you probably are not supposed to be there.” She went on to say she believes there’s a higher hand at work when life keeps putting you in uncomfortable positions, a sign, in her eyes, that you’re standing somewhere you were never meant to be.
Megan didn’t stop at “rough.” She painted an even more vivid picture of the emotional wreckage, telling InStyle, “I feel like I’ve been put through the washing machine and the dryer with tins, shovels, and a cactus.” She went on to admit, “I think I just kept trying to make pieces fit that didn’t belong, trying to fit myself into someone else’s life. I was losing myself a little bit. I am now in the space of finding me again,”
In case you needed a refresher of the timeline. Megan and Klay’s romance played out largely in public, the four-time champ even named his boat “SS Stallion” as a tribute to Megan, and back in February, Megan herself was gushing about feeling “overly comfortable” with Thompson and even hinting at wanting an engagement. Fast forward to late April, and that all flipped.
Megan dropped a since-scrutinized Instagram Story accusing Thompson of getting “cold feet,” writing that she’d been “holding you down through all your horrible mood swings and treatment towards me during your basketball season now you don’t know if you can be ‘monogamous'”
Megan followed that up with an official statement to press, making clear the split wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. “I’ve made the decision to end my relationship with Klay,” she said. “Trust, fidelity and respect are non-negotiable for me in a relationship, and when those values are compromised, there’s no real path forward. I’m taking this time to prioritize myself and move ahead with peace and clarity.” Thompson, for his part, has never publicly responded to the cheating allegations or addressed the breakup at all.
Now, months removed from the chaos, Megan is using her InStyle platform to set the record straight on what she will and won’t accept moving forward, and she’s not whispering about it. “I cannot be a person who is not gonna be me,” she explained. “I cannot not go to work. I’m going to be Megan Thee Stallion. I love being me. I love rapping. I love interacting with my fans. I love shooting music videos. I’m not a person who is in the house 24-7. I’m never going to be that.”
She continued, “And whoever dates me is gonna have to just understand, like, she is her own person. She’s her own boss. I cannot be minimized. I will not be behind any man. I will have a partner. I will be equals with my partner. I’m never gonna take the backseat to anything.”
