On Saturday (March 30), AT&T released a statement addressing a recent data leak shared to the dark web. Their statement began, “AT&T has determined that AT&T data-specific fields were contained in a data set released on the dark web approximately two weeks ago.”
The Dallas-based company continued to reveal that the affected data set appears to be from 2019 or earlier and impacts approximately 7.6 million current customers and approximately 65.4 million former. AT&T said that the compromised data does not appear to include personal financial information or call history. It’s also unclear if the data that was leaked originated from AT&T or one of its vendors.

The company wholly stated, “While AT&T has made this determination, it is not yet known whether the data in those fields originated from AT&T or one of its vendors. With respect to the balance of the data set, which includes personal information such as social security numbers, the source of the data is still being assessed. AT&T has launched a robust investigation supported by internal and external cybersecurity experts. Based on our preliminary analysis, the data set appears to be from 2019 or earlier, impacting approximately 7.6 million current AT&T account holders and approximately 65.4 million former account holders.”
AT&T added that at the time of sharing their statement, they did not have any “evidence of unauthorized access to its systems resulting in exfiltration of the data set.” However, they assured former and current AT&T customers that they are communicating proactively with those impacted and will be offering credit monitoring at our expense where applicable.”
The company also shared a note to customers on how to keep their accounts secure on their own ends, noting that a “number” of passcodes had been breached. It’s reported that TechCrunch told AT&T that their encrypted passcodes were easy to decipher. However, AT&T assured customers, “We take cybersecurity very seriously and privacy is a fundamental commitment at AT&T.”
The company said, “It has come to our attention that a number of AT&T passcodes have been compromised. We are reaching out to all 7.6M impacted customers and have reset their passcodes. In addition, we will be communicating with current and former account holders with compromised sensitive personal information.”
In the meantime of their investigation, AT&T “encouraged” former and current customers with more questions to visit www.att.com/accountsafety for more information.
