Demi Lovato is giving out some relationship advice as she looks back on dating at a younger age.
Last week, the singer dropped her song “29” which seemed to be about her ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama. In the song, she seemingly appeared to reference the age Valderrama, now 42, was when they met back in 2010. The actress was 17 at the time. “Thought it was a teenage dream / Just a fantasy / But was it yours or was it mine?” Lovato sings in the rumored diss track. “Far from innocent / What the f–k’s consent?”
Fans also caught Lovato allegedly blasting the That 70s Show actor further with the lines, “I see you’re quite the collector/Yeah, you’re twelve years her elder.” Many people speculated that line is about Valderrama’s relationship with his current wife, Amanda Pacheco, who is 12 years younger than him.
During the Aug. 24 episode of Call Her Daddy with host Alex Cooper, Lovato talks about her experience and offers some helpful dating tips to younger girls. She said, “If you’re a young girl and you think that it’s sexy or fun to date older men, it’s not OK unless you’re of age,” the 30-year-old explained.
“It’s portrayed as like, ‘Oh you scored someone older, that’s cool,’ and it’s like, actually, that’s weird,” the Disney Channel alum continued, adding that the track serves as a “reflective” moment for her. She added, “I think sometimes the public needs the truth, and that’s why I decided to release … [this] single,” the former Disney star added.
Now, Lovato has not yet confirmed whether or not the song is actually about Valderrama. But she previously stated, “the song says it all,” per Page Six.
Aside from this, Demi got even more candid on the show as she confessed to developing a drug addiction as early as 13 after being involved in a car accident that prompted her to experiment with opiates she was taking to mend the pain from the crash.
“I started experimenting for the first time when I was 12, or 13,” Lovato shared. “I got into a car accident and they prescribed me opiates.” At that time in the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer’s life, she admits to having already started drinking alcohol during this period due to the endless bullying she was said to have endured. “I had been bullied and was looking for an escape.”
As it was previously reported, Lovato suffered a near-fatal overdose back in 2018 when she was given heroin laced with fentanyl, causing her to have three strokes and a heart attack at her Los Angeles home. Following her stint in hospital and yet another rehab facility, Lovato vowed to stay “California sober.”
