Black Man Found Hanging From Tree in Orlando

The family of a black man is seeking answers after he was found hanging from a tree this weekend. Orlando Police Department and Medical Examiner’s Office believe it was a suicide, but, his family does not agree.

22-year-old Nevan Baker was found dead Sunday at 3:45 a.m. in Barker Park in Orlando, Florida. Per reports, he was found hanging from a rope tied to a tree.

“I’m not done with this situation; it’s just beginning,” said Sharhonda James, who iscBaker’s mom. “Nobody’s going to stand for this in this community.”

Baker’s mom recalls her son’s body having alarming injuries, including swelling on his nose, bumps on his head, and a broken jaw.

A woman on Twitter, who said she was his cousin also reported that he was “beaten beyond recognition.”

“We’re not going to let this go; the community is not going to let this go,” she added.

The Orlando Police Department claimed that there was no foul play and issued a statement about his death on Friday. However, Barker’s family wants officials to reopen the case.

“We have seen social media posts regarding a man who was found deceased in Barker Park. This is a tragic case of suicide, and it is difficult for investigators to discuss details publicly, out of respect to the victim’s privacy, and that of his family,” OPD said.
