Yung Miami pulled up to The Breakfast Club this week to talk about her debut solo album, Watch Dis!, and one song on the 21-track project had the whole room leaning in. “Dear…” is a direct message to her former City Girls partner, JT. The Miami rapper used her interview to explain exactly why she needed to put those feelings on wax.
The album dropped Friday, October 23, packed with names like Travis Scott, Quavo, G Herbo, Rick Ross, Trina, Trick Daddy, Bryson Tiller and Summer Walker. Caresha is riding high off “Spend Dat,” which plenty of people are calling the song of the summer. Even with all that star power, “Dear JT” is the track fans keep circling back to, because it speaks on a friendship the public watched fall apart in real time.
When the hosts asked why the song was necessary, Miami kept it all the way real. She told them the record captures what she was going through as it happened, and that she poured her emotions into the music because “music is therapy.” She added that she felt she needed to write a letter to her sister, since the two grew up together and she will always be her sister at the end of the day. She also confirmed that JT has not heard the song yet.
She was clear that the bond runs deeper than the headlines. Miami explained that this is why she never went there with JT publicly, and why their online exchanges always started with a simple “girl.” She reminded the room that the two were real friends before the fame and the money, the kind who dressed alike and shared a bed as kids.
Things got even more interesting when the hosts asked what a conversation between the two would look like. Miami said she and JT would need a mediator, because two people who each feel they did nothing wrong end up “talking to a wall.” Charlamagne Tha God threw out Iyanla Vanzant for a special episode, and Miami agreed the person has to either love them both equally or not know them at all. She admitted she would honestly prefer a stranger, because she knows she would sit there saying, “but you lying.”
The hosts also pointed out how rare it is to hear someone grieve a friendship. CTG noted that “Dear JT” is a record about mourning the loss of a friend who is still alive, and Miami nodded along. She also shut down the idea that she is using JT for promo, saying the fans claiming she is using her as a rollout have it wrong. “I’m coming from a place of love,” she said. “Ain’t no hate in my heart.”
The hosts joked about JT’s camp having no comment, so for now the ball is in JT’s court. Miami left the door wide open instead of slamming it, and for fans still holding out hope for a City Girls reunion, that might be enough to keep the conversation going.
