Tensions escalated at the YSL RICO trial when a lawyer representing Young Thug was unexpectedly detained in the courtroom on Monday.
Lawyer Brian Steel was found in contempt of court by Judge Ural Glanville for his refusal to reveal the source of information discussed in a private meeting between the judge, the State, and key witness Kenneth Copeland. Despite multiple warnings from Judge Glanville, Steel remained steadfast in his refusal to comply and disclose the information, risking potential contempt charges.
“I’m going to give you five minutes. If you don’t tell me who it is, I’m going to put you in contempt,” Glanville said. To which, Steel responded, “I don’t need five minutes.”
Following the intense confrontation, the court was adjourned for a brief recess. Upon reconvening, Judge Glanville once more pressed Steel to divulge the details of how he had obtained information about the private discussion.
“Mr. Steel, I’m going to ask you again. I need you to tell me how you got this information. This is so sacrosanct to have a conversation in my chambers parroted to you,” Glanville exclaimed.
Despite being asked one final time, Steel maintained his refusal to disclose the information before requesting a mistrial, which was ultimately rejected. Shortly after, he was taken into custody.
For more than two years now, the artist known by his legal name, Jeffery Williams, has been incarcerated. The primary accusation against him is that the initials associated with his successful label, “Young Stoner Life” (YSL), actually represent a violent gang known as Young Slime Life. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has implicated Williams, along with other Atlanta rappers and individuals linked to the alleged gang, in a comprehensive 88-page indictment involving a total of 28 defendants. The case suggests that Young Thug is not only a member of the gang but also its leader.
The trial has been going on for quite some time now and viral moments began to happen almost every week. Since the arrest of Young Thug’s lawyer, it’s unclear how the trial will now move forward.
