An aircraft carrying Malawi’s Vice-President Saulos Chilima and nine other individuals has reportedly gone missing. According to the associated Press, the president’s office released a statement confirming the disappearance of the Malawi Defense Force aircraft, which went off the radar shortly after departing from the capital, Lilongwe, on Monday morning.
Concerns arose when aviation officials were unable to establish contact with the aircraft, prompting the president to order a search and rescue operation. The aircraft was scheduled to land at Mzuzu International Airport in the country’s north, but never arrived at its destination as expected.
Per the outlet, among the passengers on the ill-fated flight were Mr. Chilima’s wife, Mary, and several officials from the vice-president’s United Transformation Movement (UTM) party. President Lazarus Chakwera, upon being informed of the incident by the Defense Force’s commander, made the difficult decision to cancel his scheduled flight to the Bahamas.

The purpose of Mr. Chilima’s flight was to represent the government at the burial of former cabinet minister Ralph Kasambara, who passed away three days ago. Prior to his political career, the 51-year-old vice-president held significant leadership positions in multinational companies such as Unilever and Coca Cola. Married with two children, Mr. Chilima has served as vice-president of the southern African country since 2014.
As the search for the missing aircraft continues, the nation remains on edge, hoping for a positive outcome and the safe return of Vice-President Saulos Chilima and the other passengers on board. At this time, the reason behind the aircraft’s disappearance remains unknown at this time, as General Valentino Phiri informed President Chakwera.
Meanwhile, Malawi’s information minister, Moses Kunkuyu, has confirmed that efforts to locate the missing aircraft are currently underway and described them as “intensive.”
