Yaqub Talib, the brother of former NFL star Aqib Talib, has been sentenced to 37 years in prison for the August 2022 murder of a youth football coach in Lancaster, Texas.
As we have previously shared, Yaqub Salik Talib, 40, was named as a suspect in the fatal shooting of children’s football coach Michael Hickmon on August 13, 2022. Lancaster Police Department officials said that a disagreement broke out between the coaching staff and an officiating crew member during a youth football game at Lancaster Community Park.
The argument quickly turned physical, and then took a deadly turn as multiple gunshots were heard being fired. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. An arrest warrant was put out for Talib, and a few days after the shooting he turned himself into Dallas County Jail officials.

Following the shooting, Lancaster Police Department officials released a statement and said, “Upon arrival, officers were notified of a disagreement among the coaching staff and the officiating crew. During the disagreement, the coaching staff was involved in a physical altercation and one of the individuals involved in the altercation discharged a firearm striking one adult male. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment where he was later pronounced dead.”
At the time of the shooting, Talib’s brother was also present on the scene. His lawyer also released a statement claiming he was “very distraught and devastated over this terrible loss of life.” The lawyer added, “He would like to convey his condolences to the family of the victim and to everyone who witnessed this unfortunate tragedy.”
The ex-NFL star famously used to play for the Denver Broncos, with whom he won a Super Bowl ring. He also played with several other teams over the years like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In September 2022, Yaqub Talib was indicted by a Dallas County, Texas grand jury on a murder charge, then a few weeks ago, on July 21, 2023, he plead guilty to the murder of the football coach.
Now, as of Monday morning (August 7), with his ex-baller brother in attendance, Talib stood inside of Dallas County courtroom where he learned that he would be sentenced to 37 years in prison for the murder committed last summer.
