Would You Be Ok With This? A Mississippi Middle School Offered Girls Shapewear To Assist With ‘Body Image’
A middle school’s attempt to address “body image” seems to be backfiring as several parents are now upset and concerned.
A letter from Southaven Middle School was reportedly sent Tuesday to parents with information about helping girls develop a healthy body image. The parents were given the option to choose whether their daughters “may receive the healthy literature, shapewear, bras, and other products” through the school’s counselors. Concerned parents said it’s wasn’t the topic that bothered them, but that the school is offering “shapewear” for the students to wear.

“I really felt that this letter really missed the mark in so many ways,” said Southaven Middle School parent Ashely Heun, who has two children enrolled at the school. “I had to read it several times. Because I thought there’s no way this is saying what I think that it says,” Heun explained. “There are girls who have a need for maybe bras or some other essential things that may be, for whatever reason, they don’t have access to, and I absolutely love the fact that the school felt that maybe they could help with that. But shapewear should have never been in the conversation,” she added per wmcactionnews5.

Following backlash, the DeSoto County School District said Southaven Middle School has pulled the plug on starting the program.
“District officials have been made aware of the parental permission form sent to parents by Southaven Middle School. While school officials have provided insight into their positive intentions, the district also understands how this type of information causes serious concern from parents. Southaven Middle School has since discontinued the implementation of the program,” District officials said in a statement to Action News 5.
