It was said that the 16-year-old student, Jamir Strane, allegedly took a swing at Bennett after the teacher mocked him with a cruel comment regarding a drive-by shooting that Jamir survived in 2020. Investigators said Bennett “admitted to saying something to the child about being shot that provoked” Jamir and led him to punch Bennett, according to the letter. Bennett reportedly told Jamir, “You’re just gonna be another Black boy shot.” After the swing, Bennett then “caught the student” and put his “whole body weight on top of him,” according to a Child Protective Services report which was included in documents related to the investigation.

Jamir previously told @local10news that he had been shot in a drive-by shooting in 2020 and that he punched Bennett after the teacher said he was “going to end up in the streets dead.” Jamir also admitted that the argument all started after the teacher asked him to put on a proper mask. Although Jamir was suspended, the investigation ultimately found that the teacher did in fact “escalate the situation” by bringing up the teenager’s traumatic shooting.

According to the Daily Mail, the student’s mother is suing the teacher for physical and emotional stress and humiliation.
