A Norfolk police officer was fired after his boss discovered that he donated money to Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse’s legal fund.

Norfolk City manager Chip Filer said in a statement that Lt. William Kelly was immediately fired at the request of Norfolk Police Chief Larry Boone after he found out that he donated money to Kyle Rittenhouse’s legal fees. Kelly also left a message along with the donation that said, “God bless. Thank you for your courage. Keep your head up. You’ve done nothing wrong. Every rank and file police officer supports you. Don’t be discouraged by actions of the political class of law enforcement leadership.” The announcement comes after a data breach revealed that several law enforcement officers donated to the young man’s legal fund.
“I have reviewed the results of the internal investigation involving Lt. William Kelly, Chief Larry Boone and I have concluded Lt. Kelly’s actions are in violation of City and department policies. His egregious comments erode the trust between the Norfolk Police Department and those they are sworn to serve. The City of Norfolk has a standard of behavior for all employees, and we will hold all staff accountable.,” the statement said. Prior to his termination, Kelly was placed on administrative duty.

“On April 16,2021, Lt. Kelly was initially placed on administrative duty after reports were made that he donated and expressed support for the actions of Kyle Rittenhouse, who is charged with multiple felonies, including homicide.”
Boone said in a statement that the police department upholds a certain standard of integrity and trust is essential in their communities.
