A Virginia doctor is sharing a frightening experience after waking up to discover a bat trying to get into her mouth while she was sleeping.
According to WRAL, Dr. Krista Edelman of Richmond was asleep in her home when the incident occurred. She later recounted the ordeal in a social media post, explaining that she initially believed she was dreaming.
“So I was dreaming, and in my dream there was a cute little field mouse. This is pretty vivid, the whole thing. A little field mouse trying to get into my mouth,” Edelman said. She explained that after waking up, she reached toward her face and realized something was there.
She Realized It Wasn’t a Mouse
Edelman said she initially grabbed the animal and felt what she believed was fur. “And then I felt on its back really kind of coarse, short hair, and when that happened, I realized that was not a mouse,” she recalled. “I screamed, and I was screaming repeatedly, something to the extent of like, ‘There’s a bat in my mouth. The bat is trying to get in my mouth.'”
The startling encounter ended with the bat no longer in her mouth, but Edelman quickly sought medical advice.
Doctor Sought Immediate Medical Treatment
Edelman contacted a friend who specializes in infectious diseases to ask what she should do.
According to Edelman, the physician advised her to seek medical treatment immediately because bats can carry rabies, and even small bites or scratches may not be immediately noticeable.
She followed that advice and received prompt medical care.
