The decision was made by the State Attorney’s Office after they concluded that using a paddle does not cause bodily harm to a child on Friday. Additionally, officials said Central Elementary School principal Melissa Carter and the school clerk Cecilia Self told police that the 6-year-old’s mother made a request to the employees to discipline her child. As reported by WINK News, the school’s policy says a child is allowed to be spanked by a teacher as long as a parent is present in the room.

The mother told police she was confused by Carter’s actions and told police that she misunderstood due to a language barrier and she didn’t fully understand the school’s disciplinary policies.

The State Attorney’s Office also dismissed an aggravated battery charge since the spanking did not lead to any severe injuries or death since it was not intentional.
