A Clewiston elementary school principal is under investigation after she used a paddle to discipline a 6-year-old female student in front of her mother.
The video of the encounter was recorded by the child’s mother when she witnessed Central Elementary School principal Melissa Carter slapping the paddle against her daughter’s bottom. The mother’s identity was not revealed in order to protect the student and she said to WINK News in Spanish that the incident occurred on April 13. She said that the school called her claiming her daughter broke a classroom computer and the penalty would be $50. Additionally, the woman said she didn’t fully understand the principal due to the language barrier and went to the school to pay the fee.
“My daughter was already in the office. The principal started to scream. There are no cameras. What are we doing in this place? My daughter and I, alone. Nobody would have believed me, I sacrificed my daughter, so all parents can realize what’s happening in this school.”

The woman took her daughter to the doctor to document the bruises and red marks caused by the paddle Carter used.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Clewiston Police Department who turned over the case to the State Attorney’s Office for the 20th Judicial Circuit. Some school districts in the area allow corporal punishment but Hendry County does not.
