Burger King is facing public backlash after a white employee was filmed wearing what appeared to be blackface while working at a restaurant’s drive-thru on Halloween.
The video, which spread widely online, shows the employee with dark makeup covering her face. A customer confronted her about the costume and explained why the appearance was offensive.
Rather than acknowledging the criticism, the employee allegedly defended her decision and claimed that wearing blackface was not wrong “as long as you have a good heart.” The exchange quickly sparked outrage on social media, with viewers criticizing both the employee’s actions and her response after being confronted. Many people argued that the incident reflected a lack of understanding about the racist history of blackface, which has long been associated with degrading stereotypes and the dehumanization of Black people.
Burger King has since addressed the controversy in a statement.
“We are aware of the video and take the matter very seriously,” the company said. The fast-food chain added that the franchise owner was addressing the situation with the employee, the manager, and the broader team.
“The Franchisee of this location is addressing the situation with his team, manager, and Team Member to ensure everyone involved understands why this is not acceptable and won’t happen again,” Burger King said. The company has not confirmed which restaurant was involved. It is also unclear whether the employee was suspended, fired, or otherwise disciplined.
Because the location is reportedly operated by a franchisee, the local owner is expected to handle employment-related consequences. However, Burger King’s public statement indicates that the company considers the incident a serious violation of its standards.
The video has also renewed debate over the difference between Halloween costumes and conduct that invokes racist imagery. Critics say that intent does not erase the historical meaning of blackface or the harm caused by publicly wearing it.
The incident remains under review, and Burger King has not released additional details about the employee’s status or the restaurant where the video was recorded.
