U.S. To Send $350M In Military Aid To Ukraine As Germany Reverses NATO Restrictions To Send 1,000 Anti-Tank Weapons & 500 Missiles

As the war between Russia and Ukraine goes on, U.S. President Biden will send $350M in military aid to Ukraine as Germany reverses its NATO restrictions to help out their “friends in Ukraine.” Earlier today (Feb. 26), Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that the President approved the aid which includes “anti-armor, small arms and various munitions, and body armor and related equipment.” Blinken added, “This brings the total security assistance the United States has committed to Ukraine over the past year to more than $1 billion.” Previously, the U.S. sent $60 million last fall and $200 million in December.

Meanwhile, Germany is temporarily lifting rules prohibiting the exchange of Germany-made weapons as they send over 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 missiles. Taking to Twitter in an official statement, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, “The Russian attack marks a turning point. It is our duty to do our best to help Ukraine defend against the invading army of #Putin . That’s why we’re supplying 1000 anti-tank weapons and 500 stinger missiles to our friends in the #Ukraine.”

The announcement marks a significant change to Germany’s  restrictive arms export policy — which states that they cannot send weapons and arms to conflict areas; largely in part of guilt for crimes committed against the Soviet Union during World War II. As mentioned, the nation is lifting restrictions it previously held among NATO allies, which prohibited sending them from sending German-based arms to conflict areas. Thus, this will allow countries like the Netherlands to send over 400 rocket-propelled grenades to Ukraine.
