Will Smith Issues Apology To Chris Rock Four Months After Oscars Slap
As we shared earlier today (Friday, July 29), Will Smith hopped on Instagram and posted a video message of his public apology to Chris Rock — whom he slapped at the 94th Academy Awards on March 27, 2022.
In Will’s video, which was titled, ‘It’s been a minutes,’ he explains that “over the last few months, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and personal work. You asked a lot of fair questions that I wanted to take some time to answer.”
Will begins to answer a question that asked, “Why didn’t you apologize to Chris Rock during your acceptance speech?”
Will goes on to explain that after he smacked Chris Rock, who joked about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, “he fogged out by that point,” claiming, “it’s all fuzzy.”
Will claims that he has tried to reach out to Chris, but was told a message claiming he is not ready to talk.
Will then finally issues a public apology to Chris Rock. He said, “I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. my behavior was unacceptable, and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”
The actor also issues an apology to Chris’ mother and his brother Tony Rock.
He said, “That was one of the things about that moment that I didn’t realize. wasn’t thinking about how many people got hurt in that moment. I want to apologize to Chris’ mother, to Chris’ family, especially his brother Tony Rock. This is probably irreparable.”
Will adds, “Disappointing people is my central trauma. I hate when I let people down, so it hurts psychologically and emotionally to know that I didn’t live up to people’s image and impression of me. The work I’m trying to do is I am deeply remorseful, and I’m trying to be remorseful without being ashamed of myself.”
He concluded, “I know it was confusing. I know it was shocking, but I promise you I am deeply devoted to putting light and love and joy into the world.”
