Oop! Y’all better stop playing with JAY-Z and his wicks because two hairstylists who’ve helped him ditch his locs for an afro are speaking out to clear the “lace front wig” allegations! One of the hairstylists is a Houston-based trichologist and loctitian (a stylist who specializes in locs), Marie Munoz. The other stylist is a texture specialist named Letisia Ravelo.
After JAY-Z’s viral set at the 2026 Roots Picnic on Saturday night (May 30), his explosive freestyle and special guests weren’t the only things trending.
His new look, featuring an afro, is what took over timelines. Social media users were conversing about how no one knew it was him that took the stage because they were waiting to see him pop out with his notable, Jean-Michel Basquiat-esque freeform locs — now, also dubbed wicks.
As Hov’s hair began trending, social media users debated if his wicks were even real or if it was a wig all along. One person even referenced Hov’s beef with Nicki Minaj. The user wrote, “Remember when Nicki Minaj claimed JAY-Z wore a wig? I love the fact that he picked out his dreads just to prove that it’s in FACT his real hair … subtle jab.”

Further silencing the wig allegations are now JAY-Z’s hairstylists. Over the weekend, Marie Munoz told users that she “combed out” Hov’s locs and it took her “4 days and 4 bottles of Cecréd,” referencing his wife Beyoncé and her mother Tina Knowles’ haircare line.
As Marie Munoz continued to educate the critics online about loc reconstruction, deconstruction, and more, another one of JAY-Z’s stylists, Letisia “Letty” Ravelo, interviewed with Loren LoRosa.
In a snippet from their interview, airing Tuesday morning on ‘The Breakfast Club,’ Letty told Loren Hov’s locs were “very much real.” She added, “It’s not a lace front so cut it out! No wigs!” While Marie said it took her 4 days to deconstruct Hov’s locs, Letty appears to share that the entire process from wicks to fro took 6 days. Letty told Loren:
“It was like a process of like eight years that he’s been growing his hair. It was a collab[oration] with this lady, her name is Marie. And it was like six days to take out all of his locs. She had used the Cecréd conditioner in combination with the detangler spray. So, [the hair] mattes together, so it’s like a combination you have to remember, your hair, natural hair intertwines with one another when you leave it alone, it’s just what it does. And in the process of that, of like years of just intertwining with one another, it just, [with] you not maintenencing [sic] it by like doing it individually — which is a different style, but he had more of a freeform wick loc. So, it was much easier to take out because [there’s] just not as so many little locs that you have to comb through. His was like, you just have bigger sections and just, like, let the product penetrate the hair and the more it penetrates your hair, it just gets softer and you just gently go through it and just gradually get to the root of the hair.“
