Another tragic incident has unfolded as a transgender woman was sadly shot and killed hours after someone called the police to inform them that she used the women’s bathroom at a McDonalds in Puerto Rico.
According to CNN, Alexa Negrón Luciano was killed in what is believed to be a hate crime, last Monday morning in Toa Baja. Hours before her murder, Luciano used the women’s bathroom at a local McDonalds and a customer contacted police to file a complaint. Officers found Luciano’s body with multiple gunshot wounds in a grassy area near a road. Her death is currently being investigated as a hate crime as confirmed by Gov. Wanda Vazquez:
“It’s cruel that these people took her life away in this manner, recording it with lack of sensitivity. That proves that these people have to be brought to justice as soon as possible.”

Luciano’s death has prompted outrage on the island and sparked criticism from LBGTQ activists like Pedro Serrano.
“People realized she was only using the bathroom like all of us need to do at several points during the day. It was so unjust. This was a realization that transphobia was real and transphobia can kill,”
Reggaeton star Bad Bunny also brought awareness about Luciano’s murder by wearing a T-shirt that said: “They killed Alexa, not a man in a skirt” during his appearance on the Jimmy Fallon Show.
