A New Jersey teen died after he climbed a railing of the Vessel and jumped late Saturday afternoon at Hudson Yards in Manhattan.

According to The New York Post, witnesses told NYPD officers that 19-year-old Peter DeSalvo of Basking Ridge “got on a railing and jumped from the sixth floor” of the Vessel around 5:30 p.m. He was alone when he committed suicide and one of the witnesses took off their jacket then covered DeSalvo’s face until police arrived at the scene.

His former high school rugby coach Simon Perry said DeSalvo played rugby at Sacred Heart University and was “the most unlikely of cases for suicide”:

“He was doing great in school. He was playing rugby at Sacred Heart. I’m going to ask to have Pete’s jersey retired.’’

DeSalvo’s death is the first suicide on the landmark since its opening in March. His family is unsure as to why he committed suicide and he is an only child. Security officers noted there were no extra measures in place to prevent suicides at the site.
