Snapchat has dispelled claims that their latest crying face filter was inspired by Amber Heard sobbing in court during her trial against ex-husband Johnny Depp. The actress was brought to tears last week when she gave her testimony in the $100 million defamation case, as she recalled the alleged abuse she endured while married to the Edward Scissorhands star. For those unfamiliar with the filter, it’s a reality lens that superimposes over people’s faces and ultimately makes the person appear to be weeping in a rather comical manner.
Following its release on the platform last week, the camera add-on has already gained a whopping 1.3 billion impressions and has been plastered all over social media platforms, including Twitter and Instagram. However, people started speculating whether Snapchat was making a slight dig at Amber, who they believed expressed an identical facial expression to the feature that millions of people are currently using on the app. “The Amber Heard filter is going hard, and they are killing me,” one person joked, while another echoed similar words, writing, “New #AmberHeard Snapchat filter just dropped. Am dead.”
According to TMZ, a rep for the multimedia messaging platform insisted that there were no ties between Amber and the crying face filter they’ve released to the public. While the timing may seem rather coincidental, it was further mentioned that the feature had been in development for six months before it launched on the app, long before the Aquaman actress’ trial began.

Amber and Johnny’s trial will commence on Monday, when the mother-of-one will again take to the stand for cross-examination. After the second day of Amber’s testimony, a spokesperson for Johnny gave a statement, saying that their client’s ex-wife had given the “performance of her life” as she mixed up her version of events and failed to align her story with what she had previously revealed in her deposition.
The statement heavily insinuated that Amber has been changing her narrative all too often. What she has presented to the jury doesn’t seem to add up anymore due to the alleged fabricated comments she has told the court regarding matters they assert never took place. “As Mr. Depp’s counsel correctly predicted in their opening statements last month, Ms. Heard did indeed deliver “the performance of her life” in her direct examination,” they said.
“While Ms. Heard’s stories have continued to grow new and convenient details, Mr. Depp’s recollections have remained exactly the same throughout the six painful years since her first allegations were made. His truth — the truth — is the same no matter the environment in which it has been presented.”
