Leave it to selfless Shaquille O’Neal to step in and show love when a family is going through the unthinkable. The Los Angeles Lakers legend is stepping up to cover funeral expenses for 12-year-old Jada West, a Georgia girl whose life was tragically cut short after a fight near her school bus stop.

The horrific incident happened earlier this month in Villa Rica, just outside of Atlanta. Police say Jada got into a fight with another student from Mason Creek Middle School at an intersection near her home on the afternoon of March 5. Days later, after collapsing in the street, she passed away at the hospital. Since then, the case has been under investigation, and emotions have been running high, especially after video of the fight spread across social media, sparking outrage nationwide.

Shaq said the story reached him through the news, and it immediately struck a chord.

“This story touched my heart the moment I saw it in the media,” said O’Neal. “As a father, my heart goes out to Jada’s family. No parent should ever have to bury their child, and if there is anything I can do to ease even a small part of that burden, then it is the right thing to do.”

Now, that wasn’t just talk either, he followed through. And beyond covering costs, he’s using his platform to remind folks what community is supposed to look like.

“Our community must surround this family with love, support, and compassion during such a painful moment.”

Meanwhile, Jada’s family is still searching for answers. Their attorneys say there were “reports of bullying” leading up to the fight, raising serious concerns about what may have been happening before that day. They’re also questioning whether the situation could have been stopped sooner, including whether a nearby bus driver could have intervened.

The Douglas County School System described Jada as “an upbeat, kind, and vibrant student,” and said grief counselors have been made available to help students and staff process the loss. The district also noted the incident did not happen on school property or during school hours. Still, that doesn’t take away from the heartbreak.

Shaq is now working alongside local law enforcement, including the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, where he serves in a community relations role, to support Jada’s family during this time.
