‘Rust’ Assistant Director Previously Fired From A Movie Set Following Prop Gun Incident
Dave Halls, the assistant director on the set of “Rust,” and the set employee who handed Alec Baldwin a prop gun that led to a fatal shooting, had previously been fired back in 2019 over a prop gun incident on another set.
The production company for the film “Freedom’s Path,” revealed to Newsweek that Halls was fired after a prop gun “unexpectedly discharged” on set.
Halls was removed from set “after a crew member incurred a minor and temporary injury when a gun was unexpectedly discharged.”
“I can confirm that Dave Halls was fired from the set of Freedom’s Path in 2019 after a crew member incurred a minor and temporary injury when a gun was unexpectedly discharged,” a producer from the film said. “Halls was removed from set immediately after the prop gun discharged. Production did not resume filming until Dave was off-site. An incident report was taken and filed at that time.”
In addition, a prop maker that used to work with Halls claims the AD had unsafe working environments on set.

Maggie Goll, a prop maker, worked with Halls on Hulu’s Into the Dark series in 2019.
“He did not maintain a safe working environment,” Goll said to NBC. “Sets were almost always allowed to become increasingly claustrophobic, no established fire lanes, exits blocked… safety meetings were nonexistent.”
As we reported, just hours before the shooting that took the life of Halyna Hutchins and wounded Director Joel Souza, the majority of Rust’s camera crew resigned due to lack of payment for three weeks, no housing and concerns of on-set gun safety.
Dave Halls has not responded to comments yet.
