Rita Wilson Says Chloroquine Gave Her & Tom Hanks ‘Extreme Side Effects’

While speaking with CBS This Morning on Tuesday (Apr 14), Rita Wilson says that the heralded drug Chloroquine, which is looked to help cure coronavirus symptoms, gave her and Tom Hanks extreme side effects.

After the 63-year-old actress and her husband, 63, caught the novel virus while filming in Australia last month, she says she can’t confirm no deny if the malaria treatment helped her beat the virus, but it definitely caused “extreme side effects.”

She tells Gayle King that after taking the drug she became “completely nauseous,” experienced vertigo, was unable to walk, and had weakened muscles. She warns, “I think people have to be very considerate about that drug. We don’t really know if it’s helpful in this case.” She confirms that Tom had milder symptoms than she did, adding, “He didn’t have as high a fever. He did not lose his sense of taste or smell.”

She confirms that neither gave the virus to each other, but rather, it came from someone they were both exposed to at the same time; however, they’re unsure who the transmitter was and when it happened.
