Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg spoke out on Tuesday (April 11) and said that he unfortunately cannot destroy the assault-style rifle that Sturgeon used to kill five people in his city, including a friend of the Louisville Mayor and a friend of Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.

Emotionally, Greenberg explained that the gunman’s rifle was confiscated after police shot him dead, but Kentucky law (KRS 500.090) requires officers to send the weapon to state police officials, in order for them to sell it at auction.

The most Mayor Greenberg can do to the rifle is remove the firing pins, which would make the weapon inoperable for at least a little bit. However, he cannot destroy the impounded weapon in any other way, otherwise it is considered illegal.
