Republicans Block Crown Act Bill That Would Ban Racist Hair Discrimination

On the final day of Black History Month, House Republicans reportedly voted to prevent a bill that would ban race-based hair discrimination.

To pass the bill on Monday (February 28), the Crown Act required a two-thirds majority as part of an expedited voting procedure, with 235 votes for and 188 votes against the bill. All of the latter votes were made by GOP partners of Congress.

According to the House Judiciary’s Twitter account, the bill will be brought up again in the coming weeks. “This week HouseGOP temporarily blocked the CROWN act, which ends race-based hair discrimination. We will bring this bill up again in the coming weeks. No one should be discriminated against because of their natural hair.”

In a statement, Democratic Reps said they will reintroduce the legislation for a vote through a long process that would only need a simple majority to pass.

“We won’t allow Republican antics to stand in the way of Black people having the right to live as their authentic selves,” the congresswomen shared in the statement.
