Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) is slamming President Donald Trump’s IRS settlement deal that shows the DOJ agreeing to create a $1.776 billion compensation fund for January 6 Capitol rioters. In response to the deal’s terms, the Texas Congresswoman has introduced the “STOP TRUMP Act” to block the Department of Justice from using taxpayer dollars to cover the fund.

As we previously shared, on Monday (May 18), Trump voluntarily dropped his $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS, which he first filed in January. In the lawsuit, Trump, his two sons, and family businesses sued the Internal Revenue Service claiming a former contractor leaked their tax returns to the media during Trump’s first term.

In settling the lawsuit, the Justice Department agreed to create a nearly $1.8 billion ”anti-weaponization” fund. I looks to compensate Trump’s allies, Capitol rioters, and help to protect the president, his family, and businesses from past and pending audits and tax prosecutions.

Trump defended the slush fund when asked about the use of taxpayer dollars to cover the “reimbursement” to January 6 rioters. During a press conference, he claimed the rioters were “treated brutally by a corrupt system” and had their “lives destroyed.”

Jasmine Crockett Slams Donald Trump’s IRS Settlement Deal Creating $1.7 Billion Slush Fund For January 6 Rioters

Since then, on Wednesday (May 20), Rep. Jasmine Crockett introduced her bill during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). Crockett said:

“Working families are struggling to afford groceries, gas, rent, and healthcare – the last thing taxpayers should be forced to do is bankroll political revenge tours and payouts for Donald Trump and his cronies. This bill makes it clear that taxpayer dollars are not a personal slush fund for presidents, political loyalists, or extremists who participated in an attack on our democracy.”

According to Crockett’s website, the STOP TRUMP Act would:

  • Ban federal funds — including the federal Judgment Fund — from being used to settle or pay claims brought by a president, their family members, political appointees, affiliated entities, or January 6 participants tied to alleged “government weaponization” claims.
  • Prohibit the creation of taxpayer-funded compensation commissions or reimbursement programs designed to reward political allies.
  • Prevent the Department of Justice from representing cases where the President could personally or politically benefit financially.
  • Require repayment of any unlawfully distributed federal funds and authorize the Treasury Department and Department of Justice to recover those funds through legal action.
