Queen Elizabeth Announces Camilla Will Be Titled “Queen Consort” When Prince Charles Is Crowned King

Before her celebration of 70 years on the throne, Queen Elizabeth II announced Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will be known as “Queen” once Prince Charles takes over the throne.

The announcement was made a day before the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee where she will celebrate her ascension to the throne. She writes, “When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when the time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service,” 

According to Insider, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla will follow the Queen’s wishes. Prior to the announcement, it was believed that Camilla will be titled “Princess consort” due to her role in the Royal Family.

“It is intended that Mrs. Parker Bowles should use the title HRH The Princess Consort when The Prince of Wales accedes to The Throne,” the 2005 press release said. The couple got married on April 9, 2005, which led to Camilla receiving the title of Duchess of Cornwall.
