During a speech at the White House on July 4th, President Trump claimed that 99% of coronavirus cases were “harmless” despite the increasing number of cases across the country.

Trump emphasized during his speech that his strategy to curve the coronavirus was “going well” and said China should be held accountable for failing to prevent the spread of the virus. He says, “Now we have tested almost 40 million people. By so doing, we show cases — 99% of which are totally harmless — results that no other country can show because no other country has testing that we have. Not in terms of the numbers, or in terms of the quality,”
Additionally, Trump claimed a vaccine will be available before the end of the year. A day after his speech, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, Dr. Stephen Hahn, declined to defend Trump’s statements about the cases and vaccines.

Hahn said during an interview with CNN‘s State Of The Union that he is in full “support the CDC and the information that they’re putting out with respect to this pandemic.” Also that the virus needs to be taken more seriously due to the data presented to the White House Task Force.
“What I’ll say is that we have data in the White House task force. Those data show us that this is a serious problem. People need to take it seriously,”
More than 2.8 million cases of the coronavirus have impacted the United States and 129,000 people have died from the virus. The CDC data reports over 35% coronavirus cases are asymptomatic but the virus can still spread.
