As of Saturday evening (February 22), the Vatican revealed that Pope Francis is hospitalized in critical condition after suffering a “respiratory crisis.” The announcement arrives after an update from Francis’ doctor on Friday (February 21). The new update suggests that his medical condition has become even more critical and complicated.

According to officials at the Vatican, located in Rome, 88-year-old Pope Francis was in critical condition on Saturday night (local time). The Vatican reports that Pope Francis suffered a long “asthmatic respiratory crisis” earlier in the day that required “high flows of oxygen,” as well as a blood transfusion.

The latter was necessary because tests showed low platelet counts, associated with anemia. On Friday, Francis’ doctors first listed him in critical condition and that he would remain in the hospital for at least another week. His condition then worsened on Saturday. Pope Francis was first hospitalized on February 14 with a respiratory tract infection that developed into pneumonia in both lungs.

Pope Francis ‘Not In Danger Of Death,’ But Not Completely ‘Out Of Danger’ Amid ‘Respiratory Crisis’

Before Pope Francis’ latest respiratory crisis, he already suffered from chronic damage to his lungs. As a young man, he had part of a lung removed. In its Saturday update, the Vatican says Pope Francis was alert and spent the day sitting up in an armchair. Meanwhile, Vatican and health officials note that “he was in more pain than yesterday.”

However, they add that he is “not in danger of death,” but is also not completely “out of danger.” Again, they are keeping him in the hospital for “at least” all of next week as doctors are concerned about the threat of sepsis, a lethal infection that can be fatal.

According to reports, as Pope Francis enters his second week in the hospital, questions continue to surface around his health. The spiritual leader of nearly 1.4 billion Roman Catholics worldwide has left parishioners wondering if he will recover, pass away, or manage to fight this infection.

Subsequent to his ongoing lung issues and recent respiratory crisis, a few cardinals have spoken out in recent days. The officials discussed the possibility of the pope resigning, as his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI did in 2013. It’s noted that a death or resignation of the people would result in a conclave of the church’s cardinals, who would then elect Francis’ successor.
