OMG! 8 Injured In NYPD Evidence Warehouse Fire That Destroyed 30 Years Worth Of Evidence, Including Items In Unsolved Cases
According to local law enforcement officials, the fire erupted around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13 at the New York Police Department storage facility in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood.
The 3-alarm fire is said have destroyed evidence, including DNA and other items collected from crime scenes, dating back up to 30 years ago. Some lawyers say that some of the evidence were a part of cold cases and bids for exoneration, and now they’ve either been partially ruined or have been completely destroyed.

The Fire Department of New York’s Chief of Department John Hodgens was the first official to speak out and confirm the massive blaze that also left eight people suffering from minor injuries. It is said that those eight include: three members of the FDNY, three EMS personnel, and two civilians.
Hodgens added, “We attempted an interior fire attack, but the members were overwhelmed by the amount of fire and we had to back all of our firefighters out of the building and go to an exterior attack.” At one point during the fire, part of the building even collapsed.
it is also reported that fire officials had to use three marine fire boats and drones to attack the fire. Hodgens added, “It was a deep-seated, heavy volume of fire, that was hard to get to the seat of the fire.”
Another official spoke out, being New York Police Department Chief Jeffrey Maddrey. Maddrey revealed that the building was a police department pound that stored “a lot of biological evidence,” in addition to e-bikes and souped-up cars seized from reckless drivers and more.
However, law enforcement officials confirm that rape evidence kits were not stored at this facility at the Erie Basin Auto Pound.

In a press conference, Maddrey continued to explain that “DNA, things from past crimes, burglaries, shooting incidents, we have some biological evidence here as well.”
He added, “It’s mainly evidence, but we store other things there as well. The evidence goes back a long time, 20-30 years. Some of the evidence was also property from (Hurricane) Sandy as well.”
Meanwhile, as of Thursday morning (December 15, )Fire Department officials have since said that they are still investigating the cause of the massive blaze.
They are also investigating how many criminal cases would be affected and the full extent of the property damage done, and damage done to “innocent people,” per civil rights lawyer Ron Kuby — who is unsure if any evidence held in the storage facility pertained to any of his clients.
