Amid the controversy of Lil Nas X’s music video for his latest single “Montero(Call Me By Your Name)”, the rapper also released a shoe to correlate with the themes presented in the clip. Over the weekend, he announced his collaboration with the brand MSCHF where the company designed a pair of Air Max 97s with a pentagram interlocked on the tongue, the scripture Luke 10:18 in reference to Satan’s fall from Heaven, and x/666, indicating the number of each shoe. The soles contain 66 ccs of red ink and a single drop of human blood and the sneaker will be released in limited pairs at a price of $1,018.
Nike said in their statement that they “did not design or release the shows and we do not endorse them.” Back in 2019, MSCHF released a previous pair of custom Air Max 97s called “Jesus Shoes” where it contained holy water in the sole with a statue of Jesus Christ on the cross interlocked on the tongue and the Matthew 14:25 scripture on the toebox.

Lil Nas X has continued to defend his reasonings for the creative direction in the video and says it is an ode to his 14-year-old self who was afraid to come out as gay.
“I spent my entire teenage years hating myself because of the shit y’all preached would happen to me because I was gay. so I hope u are mad, stay mad, feel the same anger you teach us to have towards ourselves.”
