Netflix Apologizes For ‘Cuties’ Film Poster Amid Outrage Over Sexualizing Children

Just hours after social media users called out Netflix for the film “Cuties” on their platform, the streaming service has issued an apology to those who were offended.

As we previously reported earlier this Thursday, many people were outraged after the trailer for the film was released. “Cuties,” which won the World Cinema Dramatic Directing Award at Sundance this year, follows Amy, an 11-year-old girl who joins a group of “twerkers” named ‘the cuties’ at school. Although she’s trying to explore her “femininity” through dance, she has to deal with the fact that it’s upsetting her mother and her values. According to Deadline, the film is 82% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and critics generally praised it for its handling of sensitive topics.

Now, despite that, social media users saw it as “distasteful, inappropriate, and just wrong.” Some even accused Netflix of “sexualizing’ little girls.” The company has released a statement to viewers, letting them know that they are sorry and have changed the poster of the film:

“We’re deeply sorry for the inappropriate artwork that we used for Mignonnes/Cuties. It was not OK, nor was it representative of this French film which won an award at Sundance. We’ve now updated the pictures and description.”

The new film is still set to air September 9 on Netflix. Socialites, what are your thoughts on this? Sound off in the comment box below!
