Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced that she will resign from her position in Congress, marking a dramatic shift in the political landscape as one of the most outspoken figures in the Republican Party steps away from public office.

According to NPR, Greene released an 11-minute video statement on Friday in which she criticized the Republican Party, House leadership, and President Donald Trump. Her resignation will be effective January 5, 2026. “Standing up for American women who were raped at 14, trafficked and used by rich, powerful men, should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the President of the United States, whom I fought for,” Greene said in the statement.

Greene Cites Betrayal and Division Within the Republican Party

In her video address, Greene expressed deep disappointment with the current state of the Republican Party, saying it had strayed from the principles of the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement that once united its base. Greene added that it would not be fair to her district in Georgia to ‘endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we fought for’ and stated that Republicans would most likely lose the midterms.”

Greene claimed that the party’s focus had shifted away from policy and unity toward personal vendettas and internal conflict, calling out both Trump and House Republicans for “losing sight” of the movement’s original goals. She said that the party and President Trump has changed due to the alleged lack of focus towards the ‘Make America Great Again’ vision plus focusing on ensuring Americans have more disdain towards one side than the other.”

Her comments come amid growing tensions between Greene and former President Trump, following months of political disagreements and public clashes over policy priorities and party strategy.

Greene’s relationship with Trump, once central to her political rise, has reportedly soured in recent months. Sources say the two clashed over endorsements, campaign direction, and public messaging ahead of the next election cycle.

In her statement, Greene accused the former president of personally targeting her and labeling her a traitor, despite her long history of loyalty to his administration and political ideals.
