Mariah Carey Says She Was ‘Uncomfortable’ After Her Pregnancy Was Outed During 2008 Ellen DeGeneres Interview
There have been a number of people who have spoken out to share their personal experiences with Ellen DeGeneres amid allegations of the host being “mean” and creating a “toxic work environment” on the set of her talk show.
During an interview with Vulture, singer Mariah Carey reflected on a moment where DeGeneres made her feel uncomfortable while appearing on her show. Carey looked back on
the 2008 interview, when the host asked her to confirm or deny tabloid rumors that she and then-husband Nick Cannon were expecting. Although Carey laughed off the question, DeGeneres then offered the Grammy winner a glass of champagne to prove if she was pregnant: “I was extremely uncomfortable with that moment is all I can say. And I really have had a hard time grappling with the aftermath,” Carey said in the interview that was published Monday.

As PEOPLE Magazine points out, in 2010, the superstar confirmed that she was pregnant at the time of the interview, but sadly miscarried soon after. She and Cannon, 39, layer went on to welcome twins Monroe and Moroccan. They are both now 9-years-old.
“I wasn’t ready to tell anyone because I had had a miscarriage,” Carey told Vulture if the incident. “I don’t want to throw anyone that’s already being thrown under any proverbial bus, but I didn’t enjoy that moment.” She went on to say that she wishes “empathy” had “been implemented” at the time.
Ellen has since apologized twice to staffers for “hurting their feelings:
“I’m a multi-layered person, and I try to be the best person I can be and I try to learn from my mistakes,” the host told staffers. “I’m hearing that some people felt that I wasn’t kind or too short with them, or too impatient. I apologize to anybody if I’ve hurt your feelings in any way.” It was said that “Ellen was emotional, she was emphatic about making it better and making herself more available,” a source told PEOPLE.
Another told the magazine that she said things are “going to be better moving forward. And she’s committed to that.”
