At this time, investigators are gathering additional information to help decide whether to charge the driver.
John Harrington, the commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, claimed that none of the 5,000 to 6,000 people were injured
Protesters were sitting or had taken a knee on the bridge when Vechirko drove into them.
“He wasn’t stopping. He was beeping loudly and driving into a crowd of people,” Drew Valle, told the Star-Tribune. “That’s the same kind of malice that brought us here. It’s a callous disregard for someone’s humanity.”
“A truck came. The horns were blaring,” Minneapolis resident Melanie Ramos also said to the newspaper. “It was picking up speed. It was plowing down the highway into the protesters. It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen.”
Authorities don’t think Vechirko intended to cause harm.
